John Candy net worth: Star was paid an unbelievable sum for Home Alone

John Candy died 30 years ago today, and stars have been paying tribute to the comedy legend. Planes, Trains and Automobiles co-star Steve Martin spoke to PEOPLE about Candy’s “sweetness” and “kindness”.
Fans have used AI to reimagine what their favorite star might look like if he were alive today, at 73 years old.
For film fans, John Candy’s cameo in the movie Home Alone may well be one of the most beloved in cinema history. But, according to reports, Candy’s pay left the actor feeling “bitter” about his role in the hit festive film.
John paid polka star Gus Polinski, the Polka King of the Midwest and to many an unforgettable character. But fans will be shocked to learn the paltry sum the larger-than-life star was paid for the cameo.

The actor appeared in the movie as a favor to John Hughes and was paid just $414. Director Chris Columbus told Business Insider: “There was certainly a little resentment on John’s part.
“It was a deal between him and John Hughes at the time. I never met John Candy before he came on the movie.
“I don’t know if John ever got any kind of compensation from Fox.”
Columbus said: “There were a couple of times on set when he would make a cutting remark about Fox and what he was paid.”
John Candy’s net worth is an estimated $15m. Alongside his small role in Home Alone, his other big hits include Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Cool Runnings, and Spaceballs.
